Description
The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) goes by many names,
including the Blackfoot penguin and the Jackass penguin. They are native
to southern Africa and are the only species of penguin native to
Africa. Like all other penguins, they are black and white as adults, but
they first show a different blue pattern right after losing their baby
fluff. Only after their first molt at 1 year do they get their classic
black and white colors.
SANCCOB (South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds)
rescues and rehabilitates injured or abandoned seabirds. They take in
any seabird, but the bulk of their patients tend to be African penguins,
who nest on the coast nearby. Many of the penguins they take in are
chicks and eggs that were abandoned by their parents for various
reasons. The babies are hand-raised and re-released when they are old
enough and in good enough condition to survive on their own.
